Associate Professor Michael Stubbs - Specialist Oral Medicine BDS MDS MDSc FRACDS
Sleep disordered breathing includes obstructive sleep apnoea and upper airway resistance syndrome. The treatments currently used in the management of patients involve Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP); Surgery and Mandibular Advancement Splints (MAS). In the general population it is estimated that 4% of males and 2% of females suffer obstructive sleep apnoea (1). An estimated 10% of patients who snore have sleep apnoea.
This is a unique area of dentistry in which colleagues work with sleep physicians or sleep scientists to treat a patient diagnosed with a sleep disordered breathing condition such as obstructive sleep apnoea; upper airways resistance syndrome (UARS) or snoring.
Typically many patients in their life time may experience pain or a change involving the skin of their mouth (we call the oral mucosa). Oral Medicine is a specialty of dentistry that is trained to both diagnose and in most cases, manage the oral health problem.
Dr Stubbs also specialised in the diagnosis and treatment of Oral-Facial pain, which is not caused by the teeth. The type of pain may include neuralgia (most common form is trigeminal neuralgia) or burning mouth syndrome.
